Professional Biographies
President
Lena Tam served two terms on the Alameda City Council, starting in November 2006, garnering the highest number of votes in that election to become Vice-Mayor and re-elected in November 2010. Lena has been active in leadership roles within the community, serving on the Board of the League of California Cities, and as president of the Asian Pacific Islander Caucus. Lena was elected to the Alameda Health Care District Board of Directors and served as president of the Board. She volunteers her time encouraging civic engagement as the past president of the Alameda League of Women Voters, chair of the East Bay Asian Voter Education Consortium, and also served on the executive board of the National Women’s Political Caucus and Save the Bay. Lena is a licensed civil engineer in California and manages the water and power resources for the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), She is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley and the holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil/environmental engineering and a Masters degree in public administration.
Vice President
Serena Chen has a long history of community advocacy, beginning with fighting for youth, social and health care services for Asian immigrants in Oakland’s Chinatown in the early 1970’s. She worked with fellow community activists in successfully advocating for youth, employment, mental health and health care services, as well as for the inclusion of a library, cultural center, and affordable housing in the Chinatown redevelopment area now called Pacific Renaissance Plaza. Serena currently organizes community support for tobacco control and other clean air policies in Alameda County and other Bay Area communities.
Treasurer
Kenneth Pon graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, and now is a CPA with a private practice in downtown San Leandro. His involvement in San Leandro Unified began at the elementary level with the Dads Club, and continued through the middle and secondary levels. He was also the Chairman and treasurer of Yes For Kids! School Bond Committee, served on the District Action Planning Team for Facilities and the District Financial Resource Advisory Committee. Kenneth is a member and past Director of the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce, member and past president of the Downtown Business Association and the San Leandro Breakfast Club.
Board Secretary
Marilyn Ng has served as Vice-President of the Caucus with Pres. Rob Bonta and as Co–President of the Caucus with Greg Chan. She is an active member of the Alameda League of Women Voters and has served as Membership Chair and Vice-President of Programs among other positions. She is a member and a past president of the Friends of the Library of Alameda. She received her B.A. from the Univ. of California, Berkeley, and a Masters in Library Studies from the Univ. of Hawaii at Manoa. Marilyn is a retiree of the Library at Univ. of California, Berkeley.
